There was a time when the U.S Army used bugles to signal different things, from sounding the Charge when in battle or for sounding “taps” at the end of the day. Bugles were used for other signals to indicate what troops should do, everything from assembly to a call to religious services. A bugler had a recognized skill and his own special insignia. Bugles have been an important part of our military history.
My husband was in the navy and he says that other than the playing of “Taps” bugle calls were no used that much. With modern communications equipment, bugle calls have pretty much fallen to ceremonial use in military units. I still love to hear drum and bugle corps when they play or participate in a parade. Do you have the desire to learn the bugle? I think it would be fun to learn.
